
Forests are true climate protectors
Forests bind CO₂, store water, regulate temperatures – and are therefore an indispensable part of the solution in the fight against the climate crisis. But not every forest protects the climate equally well. What matters is how the forest is structured and how we use it.
Deciduous mixed forests: all-rounders in climate protection
Carbon store: As it grows, every tree absorbs CO₂ from the atmosphere and stores it long-term in the wood, in the soil and in the humus layer.
Cooling effect: Forests evaporate water through their leaves – this lowers the ambient temperature. Deciduous trees cool more effectively than conifers.
Water storage: Intact forests hold back rain, release it slowly into the groundwater and thus protect against flooding and drying out.
Resilience: Mixed forests with various native species are more stable against storms, drought and pests.
Monocultures: Little protection, high risk
Many forests today were established as managed forests – often with pines or spruces in neat rows. These monocultures:
- store less CO₂ per area,
- are more susceptible to storm damage and bark beetles,
- have lower water retention,
- promote soil erosion and low biodiversity.
