Forests are true climate protec­tors

Forests bind CO₂, store water, regulate tempe­ra­tures – and are there­fore an indis­pensable part of the solution in the fight against the climate crisis. But not every forest protects the climate equally well. What matters is how the forest is struc­tured and how we use it.

 

Deciduous mixed forests: all-rounders in climate protec­tion

Carbon store: As it grows, every tree absorbs CO₂ from the atmosphere and stores it long-term in the wood, in the soil and in the humus layer.
Cooling effect: Forests evapo­rate water through their leaves – this lowers the ambient tempe­ra­ture. Deciduous trees cool more effec­tively than conifers.
Water storage: Intact forests hold back rain, release it slowly into the ground­water and thus protect against flooding and drying out.
Resili­ence: Mixed forests with various native species are more stable against storms, drought and pests.

 

Monocul­tures: Little protec­tion, high risk

Many forests today were estab­lished as managed forests – often with pines or spruces in neat rows. These monocul­tures:

  • store less CO₂ per area,
  • are more suscep­tible to storm damage and bark beetles,
  • have lower water reten­tion,
  • promote soil erosion and low biodi­ver­sity.
